Functionality Of Kwyni’s Home Automation Sub-Systems

Centralised Lighting Control.

It would be possible to switch ALL the lights in the entire home “On” or “Off” from any designated location. That is made possible by centralising control of all lights in your home, making it possible to do virtually anything with lighting in your home. Examples are:

Automated lighting scenes are possible in any part of the home which could be linked to other services such as audio playback, water features, curtains, etc. These would be time-based activities to ensure that your home is always warm and welcoming when you enter. The system has an astronomic clock that determines when the sun will rise and set in your region on any day of the year. This ensures reliable functioning of your automated settings regardless of the season.

Preset scenes are also possible. Examples of commonly used scenes are “Cocktail”, “Dinner”, “Party”, “Holiday”, etc. “Holiday” mode could mean that while you are away on holiday, the system could turn lights on/off in various parts of your home following a number of pre-programmed timing sequences, creating the impression that there is someone at home.

Lighting scenes can be automated for the various modes of your home cinema (before the movie starts, while the movie is playing, intermission, etc.).

The lighting in parts of the house (e.g.: foot-lights in the passages) could be switched on/off automatically when movement from a person is detected in that vicinity. Load management could be achieved where absence of movement in specific spaces would trigger a “lights-off” action in that area.

All or some automated modes could be by-passed when it is required to do so. You will not be forced to follow the logic programmed into the system.

It is possible to change the logic programmed into the lighting system after commissioning to meet new requirements. So if you want to adjust the logic in certain areas, it is merely a case of re-programming the system.

Distributed video and/or audio.

Various levels of functionality can be achieved in the designated areas of your home. With a KWYNI system, it will be possible to select background music from the hub to be played in any designated area. The audio can be selected from a range of audio sources which could include a CD player/changer, radio stations, a music server and an MP3 player. In each area, you would be able to select what you want to listen to as well as adjust the volume. The system offers full control of the source including track selection, play, pause and stop. The audio amplifiers and speakers used for background music are selected based on their musical fidelity and will be specified to meet your audio requirements and budget.

Multiple areas in your home will be enabled to independently select a movie to view. Each area could be a fully equipped home cinema or any room with a TV, LCD or plasma screen. Your entire DVD and CD collection can be transferred onto a media server in its exact original digital format (uncompressed) which makes the collection instantaneously accessible from any location in your home.

DSTV and RF Systems

img KWYNI will design and install the entire DSTV system and the RF distribution system throughout your home. As with all sub-systems, this is done with integration in mind. It will not only be possible to watch DSTV channels on any TV or plasma in the home, it would also be possible to select a movie from your media server, or to view CCTV images of visitors at the main entrance.

PABX and Ethernet LAN

The design and installation of the hardware and cabling system required to get telephone calls to any part of your home can be handled by KWYNI. The PABX functionality could be integrated into the control and AV system of your home. Similarly, the hardware and cabling system required to create a computer network in your home. This network could be based on a wired design or a wireless LAN.

Security (Alarm, CCTV & DVR, Access Control)

img Kwyni has the technical competence to effectively integrate all these sub- systems as part of an integrated solution.

Internet

It is also possible to get selected information such as the weather report, key stock-exchange information, rates of exchange, etc. from the Internet and display it on a user-interface. Control of the system from a remote internet point can be facilitated.

Videoconferencing or Audio Conferencing

img KWYNI has many years' of experience in the successful implementation of videoconferencing and audio conferencing systems in the corporate market. There is a trend towards the deployment of these technologies in the private home. Your home office or study can be equipped with these technologies which will enable you to hold a videoconference or hands-free telephone call to business associates or distant relatives. In keeping with KWYNI’s philosophy, these systems will be fully integrated into the rest of your home automation system.

Integration of other Home Sub-systems

imgAs mentioned previously, other sub-systems can be integrated into your home automation system. Besides the sub-systems mentioned previously, KWYNI has integrated irrigation systems, a marine fish tank (controlling parameters such as water temperature, salinity, etc.)

System Monitoring

KWYNI has perfected the ability of the system to notify you or KWYNI of any abnormal state in your system, based on pre-defined parameters. Following a specified alarm activity or an abnormal system state an email or SMS notification can be invoked. For example, if your projector lamp reaches 80% of its life-span, it would be advantageous to be notified of this, to avoid an unexpected failure of the lamp, when you could be viewing a movie or major sporting event in your home cinema with visitors.

Home Cinema

A home cinema can be installed in your home which could range from a comfortable home entertainment room or it could offer you a state-of-the-art cinematic experience equal to what you would expect at the best mainstream movie houses. A full surround-sound and video display system can also be installed in other parts of your home, such as the main bedroom or family room. Technological integration of the equipment in these AV rooms into the rest of the audio and video infrastructure in your home is vital. An example of the importance of this is the situation when someone rings the door bell at your main entrance. If you are in your home cinema watching a movie, it will be possible to view the CCTV camera at the front door on your movie screen.

Important to note is that the success of an integrated home automation solution is dependent on a few key factors and the following are probably the most important.

KWYNI’s early involvement in the design of your home

This is not just for the provision of cable access throughout the house, but also for space planning. If a home cinema or videoconferencing room is planned in your home, its shape and necessary adjoining spaces are critical to achieve an effective home cinema. Also the housing of equipment needs to be catered for which could result in a central equipment room, determined based on the size of your home and the system functionality you require. That requires that KWYNI should be involved at the architectural design stage of your project.

Careful selection of equipment and sub-systems

As stated previously, the level of integration that can be achieved is dependent only on the equipment and sub-systems that will be integrated. The wrong choice could limit what integration will be possible in your home. KWYNI should be involved in the selection of the equipment and sub-systems to be integrated. Think of your home automation system as the “glue” in your home. It binds everything together to create one system.

Maintenance of the system

as an integrated whole after its installation is of paramount importance to ensure the long term trouble free functioning of the system and all the sub-systems. Therefore it is advantageous to have KWYNI as a single point of contact to handle all maintenance and sub-system malfunctions. Failing this, sub-system suppliers and other contractors may blame each other for system failures with the home owner incapable of establishing the true cause and necessary corrective action.

Disclaimer

The above system and sub-system descriptions are generic and describe the scope of what is possible from an integrated automation solution. This does not imply that these features will, as a matter of course, be included in any specific system design done by KWYNI. The detailed quotation prepared by KWYNI will describe specific system features and functionality, based on individual user requirements. If doubt exists, please consult with your KWYNI representative to gain clarity.
